FMERA

Our beginnings ..

The estate was constructed from 1946 to house the families of those working on the Harwell campus.

Fitzharry’s before the estate

Our area has a long and varied past. Find out more about its history before the building of the estate.

Building the estate

In 1946 the Ministry of Works began building an estate of 140 houses for the staff and families of the new Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell.

Living on the estate

From the beginning the estate enjoyed a rich social life – enlivened by the presence of our very own defectors and spies!
